Mercedes-Benz's answer to Porsche and the venerable 911 has burst onto the scene at the Paris motor show in a big way, and while the Mercedes-AMG GT spins on its plinth, already there's talk of the model's future plans and how much it might cost

Mercedes-Benz-AMG-GTUnlike the gull-winged SLS AMG which only stuck around for five years, Affalterbach has suggested the first in-house AMG sports car will be a multi-generational car, lasting the conventional six-to-eight-year cycle, with plenty of future variants planned. Amongst them you can expect a back-to-basics, angry Black Series edition, a convertible, perhaps a GT3, who knows.

To kick the cycle off AMG has already shown the Mercedes-AMG GT S Edition 1 (pictured here). In traditional Edition 1 fashion the model kicks off sales with a bang courtesy of a whole whack of optional extras fitted as standard.

These include an aero package featuring a large front splitter and fixed rear wing combo. The dark accents around the car, dark-coloured rims, and slightly modified front and rear bumpers are part of the Night Package. Then you'll have undoubtedly seen the great-looking carbonfibre roof and an interior swathed in black Nappa leather with red contrasting stitching, aluminium trim everywhere and plenty of Edition 1 logos.

While Mercedes-AMG discuss model plans it's also stuck a Euro-denomination prices on the car.

The more potent GT S develops 375kW/650Nm from its 4.0-litre V8 and costs the equivalent of £105 000 in the UK, which should, according to our estimations, translate close to R1 725 000 in SA. And then of course you get the Edition 1 model pictured here which retails for £116 000, or closer to the R1 900 000, if you use similarly ropey topcar maths.

At present the entry-level 340kW/600Nm GT is priced at 115 430 Euros (£90 000 in UK-speak) and that is mighty close to the £91 098
